Arolla to La Sage


After a lovely rest day, it was back to hiking today. We hiked down to the tiny village of Arolla and stopped to buy some items for lunch. 


The next stop was a post office where some members of our group mailed two packages of stuff from their backpacks in order to “lighten their loads.”



After that, we started hiking to La Sage. 


While the day’s hike started with more uphill than we had anticipated, we eventually got up to a beautiful meadow surrounded by mountain peaks. Kris and I immediately thought “the hills are alive with the sound of music.”
 




Eventually we hiked down into the town of Les Haudères and stopped for a cold drink before making our final ascent up to La Sage.




After our refreshment stop, we had about an hour hike up the mountain to La Sage.



We are staying at the Hotel de La Sage which is where we stayed eight years ago. It is just as lovely as we remembered. 







After showers and washing some clothes, we had time for some drinks on the patio. 









 The delicious “half board” dinner was wonderful!



 
After dinner, we went outside to get a final picture with the setting sun before heading up to our rooms to get organized for a long day of hiking tomorrow.

An Unbelievable 60 Hours

After all our very careful, calculated planning of what to pack, it all got, as Greg says, “flushed down the toilet!” If the pandemic taught us anything, it is that we have to be really flexible and fluid! The best laid plans . . .  It all started in Minneapolis when the pilot announced there were some “mechanical difficulties” after the entire plane was loaded. 😆 Two and a half hours later, we were underway, but we were pretty sure we might miss our connection in Paris. When we arrived in Paris at 8:30 am, the soonest flight we could get on to Geneva was 9 pm. So, we spent almost 12 hours in the Paris airport. Luckily, due to Tom and Chanda’s perks, we were able to stay in a lovely lounge and start tasting all kinds of good French food. But once we finally arrived in Geneva at 10:30 pm, things took a turn when Greg and Betsy’s duffel bags with their backpacks, poles, and hiking boots didn’t show up. Trient to Champex

When we are hiking, we are either staying in mountain huts or small hotels that cater to hikers. Typically, your breakfast is included and you can order a “half board” for dinner which is a set menu. Our hotel in Trient was run by a husband and wife who took over the hotel from one of their parents. I took a photo of myself with one of our hosts - they were both so welcoming. The food was great and part of the fun is you get a chance to meet hikers coming from many different countries. Hikers prepare themselves in many ways - a group doing yoga as we got ready to leave.  After about an hour of climbing up switchbacks, we reached a place we had fondly remembered from our last trip so we took a short coffee break. From there we continued to climb before we reached a beautiful meadow that has a cross overlooking the valley below.  Once again, we continued to climb with the goal of reaching the Bovine Meadow where we planned to have lunch.  Hence the name Bovine Valley The small wood hut h
